Where to Settle

The Bay is not one place, it is a dozen. And here is the secret nobody in Missouri could tell you: it runs on a gradient. The further north you go β€” up into San Francisco β€” the louder, younger, and more hype it gets: consumer apps, crypto, AI, founders who will pitch you in a coffee line. The further south you go β€” down into Silicon Valley β€” the more serious it gets: deep tech, hardware, the trillion-dollar companies, the people who quietly build the machines. Pick your altitude on that gradient by who you want to become. And pick your literal weather while you're at it: the Bay is a patchwork of microclimates β€” summer fog can hold San Francisco in the low 60s while an inland valley an hour south bakes in the 80s and 90s. R-095 You choose your climate by neighborhood. (For the record, we chose Morgan Hill β€” about as far south as this gradient goes before it turns into garlic fields β€” which should tell you exactly how seriously we are taking this. Or how cheap the rent is down there. Possibly both.) Click a region.

San Francisco

The top of the funnel and the top of the volume knob. San Francisco is where the youngest, loudest, most optimistic version of the Bay lives β€” where a stranger in line will tell you about the company that is going to change everything, and one time in fifty they will be right. Come here first for the energy. It is the most alive place many people ever stand.

ClimateCool, foggy summers (bring a hoodie in July), mild wet winters. The famous "coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" city.

Weekend escapes

Pick your base partly by what you want a Saturday to be.

Lake Tahoe

about 200 miles, roughly 3.5–4 hours by car from San Francisco R-093

A giant alpine lake ringed by ski resorts, three-ish hours up into the Sierra Nevada. Snowboarding in winter, swimming in a mountain lake in summer. This is the reason a lot of Bay Area weekends end with everyone's car pointed east on I-80.

Santa Cruz

about 32 miles, roughly 40–45 minutes from San Jose over Highway 17 R-094

A funky beach town over the hill from Silicon Valley β€” surf, a boardwalk, redwoods, and a completely different vibe from the office parks forty minutes inland. The classic South Bay decompression valve: build machines all week, put your feet in the Pacific on Saturday.
